Troon

The beautiful and still mostly traditional seaside town of Troon sits on the Ayrshire coastline and boasts stunning sandy beaches with views overlooking Ailsa Craig and the Isle of Arran. It retains the old seaside charm whilst offering modern facilities for the visitor.

World famous as the venue for The Open Championship which is played at Royal Troon, golfers are spoilt for choice with seven golf courses to suit every budget but Troon has so much more to offer than just well manicured fairways with great hotels, restaurants, festivals and more.

The town centre offers a variety of independent cafes, unique gift shops and hosts a monthly street market offering fresh local produce.

Troon Yacht Haven offers fantastic facilities for sailing enthusiasts and both North and South Beaches are well used by wind and kite surfers with some spectacular action available on a windy day! Alternatively you can just take it easy and stroll along the miles of beaches south towards Prestwick or head north towards Irvine. You may lose track of time!

With two stations, Troon and Barassie, and two services per hour to and from Glasgow and Ayr, it is easy to reach by train and by car the town is no more than forty minutes from the centre of Glasgow whilst Prestwick Airport is only a couple of miles away.

Whether you're looking for a local day out shopping, a weekend short break, a live music festival or an activity holiday there is something for everyone in and around Troon.

Where are we?

Troon is located in Ayrshire on the west coast of Scotland around forty minutes drive from Glasgow and an hour and a half from Edinburgh and sits on the Firth of Clyde with wonderful views out to the Isle of Arran and Ailsa Craig

Why visit?

Troon is probably best know for its golf with courses weaving their way through the whole town from north to south. It famously is a regular venue for The Open Championship and Royal Troon Golf Club will once again host the world famous event in July 2023 one hundred years after it did so for the first time.

But there's more to Troon than golf and with a superb marina and berthing facilities at the harbour, a vibrant live music venue in the Concert Hall, a superb selection of independent retailers and a choice of great restaurants, bars and cafes there is something for all ages all year round.

Healthy walks include the Smugglers Trail which goes over the hill to historic Dundonald Castle or beautiful and bracing beach walks extend for miles long the promenade to Prestwick in the south and all the way to Irvine to the north and there is a strong network of cycle paths.

There is easy access to the rest of the attractions in Ayrshire which offer a year round  and easy access to a choice of accommodation from five star luxury through to bed and breakfasts and self catering

How to Get Here

Access to Ayrshire in general and Troon in particular is pretty straightforward regardless of means of transport.

Flying into Scotland has become easier with routes into Edinburgh and Glasgow making it easy to get to the west coast of Scotland quickly enough even for the shortest of weekend breaks. You can easily get to Ayrshire form both airports - less than an hour from Glasgow and not an awful lot more from Edinburgh. Prestwick Airport is close by but there are only a limited number of destinations served mostly from southern Europe but if you're lucky enough to be coming from Spain or Italy it's perfect and only a short taxi or rail journey to Troon.

If you are travelling by train there are two railway stations in Troon - the main one near the town centre and the other in Barassie. It's the main electrified route to Glasgow so offers a couple of trains per hour at least. Couldn't be easier and direct trains from Edinburgh too.

Access by car has become much better over the years with motorway almost all the way to Troon itself via the M77 which links directly to the M8 from Edinburgh and Glasgow and the M77 from the south.

Have a look at the Google map links throughout the site to get an idea of the routes.

What to Do?

As stated above Troon is blessed with great golfing facilities from the more expensive Open Championship venue to well cared for public courses. Have a look at the list of courses linked below.

More recently Troon has attracted attention for its live music and now hosts WinterStorm, one of the UK's most popular Classic Rock weekends every November. The venue, Troon Concert Hall is an old school live venue complete with balcony and offers a superb range of live music and events throughout the year. There is an update list of bookable events below - why not book your ticket and make a weekend of it?

When the wind blows - and the wind blows often - you'll see kite and wind surfers on both the north and south beaches riding the breakers. The sea provides plenty of options for activities and Troon Marina is the place to explore further with charters and fishing trips available.

Cyclists and walkers can enjoy the flat coastal routes or move inland and tackle the hills; and if you just want to chill there are hotels with spas and leisure facilities and yes, gymnasia if required!

Sporting activities abound too - Ayr Racecourse is just down the road and a full calendar of flat and jump racing takes place at Scotland's Premier Racecourse. Kilmarnock and Ayr United are close by so if visiting Ayrshire for a football match why not stay over with a great Playing Away, Staying Away package and enjoy the area regardless of the result!

When should you visit?

Events and festivals, conferences and business gatherings, sporting fixtures, theatre and concerts take place throughout the year not only in Troon but across the county of Ayrshire. Of course the golf courses are more likely to be busy between May and September but that doesn't mean a winter golf break is out of the question; great autumn prices and Spring and Autumn can make a great trip away!

Music weekends such as WinterStorm in November, Mod Weekends in May and Blues ion February all extend the season.

Have a look at the Event calendar in the what's on areas of the site or follow One Ayrshire on Facebook for regularly updated summary of what's happening across the county and all within easy reach of Troon

So is it for you?

Don't let the sleepy perception fool you - there's plenty of life in Troon if you're looking for it but equally quiet walks and solitude if that's your wish. Luxury hotels to budget accommodation, live music to great golfing breaks with your friends. World class events such as The Open Championship and more local ones such as the annual Lowland Games at nearby Dundonald Castle.

History and heritage abound, quality food and drink and local produce aplenty. Whether passing through on a tour or just a wee short break Troon's a great place to base yourself and explore what the town and the rest of Ayrshire can offer.

So whoever you are, Troon won't disappoint.
